Nonviolence does not require large numbers of people (though that can help).
It requires singleness of purpose and a deepening commitment. It can be offered by a single person, if need be, quite effectively.
1. Go deeper: Read about person power at our glossary and then about soul-force below.
2. Practice: What have you been inspired to commit yourself to transforming or understanding in your lifetime? How are the daily practices you are trying in this course nurturing or influencing this commitment?
Is soul force really superior to body force?
We would need to look at the big picture, I think, in order to decide. Gandhi says that it’s easy to see, but is it really? When we have been taught that violence and competition are sacred it’s hard to believe that they are ineffectual, unless we suspend our judgment and let ourselves stand outside of that conditioning, be detached, and really look.
This is the basis for finding practical, long-term solutions to our political and spiritual crises: letting nonviolence speak for itself, once we have the eyes to see it. Gandhi has no doubt what we will realize.
