MEMORIAL DAY PROGRAM
MONDAY, MAY 27, 2024

We are very pleased to invite you to our annual Memorial Day Program at the Vedanta Retreat in Olema.

Our program, which has been an interfaith program for over forty years, will be on Monday, Memorial Day, May 27. It will begin at 10:00 a.m. with an invocation, chanting, and meditation. Our guest speaker will be Professor Michael Nagler who will speak on "The Relevance of Vedanta for America Today."

Swami Tattwamayananda, the minister in charge of our Society, will also speak, and his topic will be "From Religion to Spirituality."

The talks will be followed by a complimentary lunch. In the afternoon, there will be a Q&A session, which will be followed by takeout refreshments at 4 p.m. and informal meetings with the speakers.


Michael Nagler  is professor emeritus of Classics and Comparative Literature at UC, Berkeley. He co-founded one of the first Peace and Conflict Studies Programs in the U.S. In 1983, he co-founded the Metta Center for Nonviolence, and he continues to dedicate his life to the values of meditation, spirituality, and nonviolence with a particular appreciation for the role of science. A dedicated nonviolence aspirant, he was the recipient of the Jamnalal Bajaj International Award for “Promoting Gandhian Values Outside India” in 2007.

Prof. Nagler is the co-host of Nonviolence Radio, a popular radio show and podcast for nonviolence learning and exploration. He is the author of many articles and books, including The Search for a Nonviolent Future: A Promise of Peace for Ourselves, Our Families, and Our World; The Nonviolence Handbook: A Guide for Practical Action;  and The Third Harmony: Nonviolence and the New Story of Human Nature. Most recently he directed and produced a documentary on nonviolence: The Third Harmony. He continues his work for peace at the Metta Center for Nonviolence to this day.

Swami Tattwamayananda is the minister in charge of the Vedanta Society of Northern California, San Francisco. A monk of the Ramakrishna Order of India and a former teacher at the Order's monastic Probationers' Training Center in India, Swami Tattwamayananda is a scholar in Sanskrit, Vedic studies, and Indian philosophy. In addition to Sanskrit and Indian philosophy he has taught Hindu, Vedantic, and Buddhist scriptures, and he travels worldwide giving talks and retreats.
 

There is no charge for the program. The Vedanta Retreat is located in the small town of Olema in west Marin County, 9799 California Hwy 1 — about an hour's drive from the Golden Gate Bridge. Please RSVP by May 25 at sfvedanta.org.
