In a gentle way, you can shake the world.
Every now and then friends of Metta send us small tokens of care and affection. Just last week, our friend Asha sent us a handspun, hand-woven, hand-embroidered banner with the powerful words of Gandhi on it: In a Gentle Way, You Can Shake the World. We immediately hung it in Michael’s workspace, right beneath our poster of Gandhi at the spinning wheel, reading a paper. It brings a spirit of love and joy to the space, and uplifts us to look at it. She said this when we thanked her:
Thank you very much for appreciating my artifact. I am a daughter of the province Kutchh, which is renowned for embroidery, block printing, and tie and dye, and Khadi is in my blood, so I try to combine both handy craft and village industry.
You may like to know about and support the UK organization Khadi London Cic, to which Asha has devoted so much of her time and energy. They are hosting a “Festival of Natural Fibers” from October 16-20, and you can learn more about that at this brief they’ve sent us. They are also striving to raise funds for their work and you can support them by donating at this link.
Asha would also like for Metta people to know about the Annual UK Gandhi Foundation lecture which will be delivered by Paul Bazely this year. He will explain how he ‘Became Gandhi’ for the National Theatre’s production of ‘The Father and the Assassin.’ Tickets available here.
