Listening to Conscience

Principle:

A key feature of Gandhian nonviolence is conscience. One should never act against their own conscience, even if it means going against what others—Gandhi included—might wish. Nonviolence is not about unquestioning obedience but about deep moral clarity: acting in alignment with one’s inner truth and accepting the consequences of doing so. As Gandhi said, "The only tyrant I accept in this world is the still small voice within me."

Reflection:

Think of a time when your conscience led you to make a difficult or unconventional choice. What guided you in that moment? Have there been times when you ignored your conscience—what happened as a result? How can you strengthen your ability to listen to and act on your conscience in daily life?
